Vocational Training Centre – Heart NTA

The Vocational Training Centre is one of the twenty six training institutions that is fully owned and operated by the HEART Trust/NTA. The Centre caters to persons seventeen years and older to access its training programmes, this is achieved by accomplishing one of the following two criteria:

  • Obtain passes in at least one CXC or an equivalent qualification

  • Obtain a pass in an internally administered test set at the grade 9 level

The institution operations are maintained by quality standards to which guidelines are set and monitored by the National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET).

The institution is accredited for the offering of the following training areas:

  • Food Preparation Level 2 (Commis Chef)

  • Food preparation Level 3 (Chef de parte)

  • Food & Beverage Level 2 (Captain)

  • Food & Beverage Level 2 (Hosting)

  • Housekeeping Level 2 (Linen Room Attendant)

  • Marketing & Promotions Level 2 (Merchandising)

It should be noted that we are the only training institution with in the corporate area accredited by the NCTVET to offer the above listed courses.

Boys’ Town VTC has an annual enrolment target of 510 trainees while our targeted certification figure stands at 365. The institution also provide training at an off site location in St. Catherine at the Portmore Seven Day Adventist Church on Port Henderson Road.

The institution plays an integral role in the Trench Town Community in the following ways:

  • Training and certification of community members

  • Assisting with Job placement

  • Partnering with the Basic School through our Housekeeping programme

  • Annual visitation to the Golden Age Home

  • Provide technical assistance to MOE schools

  • Ongoing promotional activities

The institution is renowned for preparing excellent meals; we also provide catering service for all occasions for corporate business and private entities in Kingston and St. Andrew. Boys’ Town is referred to as the “Oasis in the desert” because of where we are located and the uniqueness of our operations.

The institution has entered and cop awards in many competitions over the years for example WorldSkills, JCDC, CB Pan Chicken, numerous other cook offs and baking competitions. Our trainees have gone on to obtain employment in areas of the hospitality and commercial sectors both locally and overseas. You can find our trainees working in most of the major hotel chains and Marketing/Commercial companies across the island, on various cruise shipping lines, in various Caribbean Countries, North America, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Dubai. One of our Food & Beverage trainees was recently employed at the residence of the Governor General as houseman.
